Apple may be joining the foldable smartphone trend a bit later than others, but there are rumors that they will launch a foldable phone in 2026 when the iPhone 18 Pro models come out. While the tech company from Cupertino hasn’t verified this new phone yet, more information has been shared about the foldable device, commonly referred to as the iPhone Fold. A well-informed journalist suggested that it might mix features from both the iPhone and the iPad in how users interact with it. The design is thought to make use of its larger foldable screen, which would let users operate two apps at the same time. Many believe that the iPhone Fold will be Apple's first venture into the foldable phone market and might introduce new ways to multitask that older iPhone models lack. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this rumored phone will present an interface similar to that of an Apple iPad when it is opened.
When the device is unfolded, it is said to have a large screen that supports multitasking with two applications displayed next to each other. Current iPhones do not support running two apps at once on the main display, except for limited picture-in-picture options for videos and calls. This new model is also expected to have app sidebars on the left side of the screen, reflecting the layout found on many iPad apps. Apple is reportedly working on tools for developers so that they can adjust their existing applications for this broader interface. Regarding its design, the foldable phone is said to be a blend of an iPhone and an iPad mini. The journalist noted that it will look like a regular flat iPhone when folded, with a traditional outer screen. However, when it is opened up, the screen's size is expected to be more like that of an iPad mini. The tech giant is reportedly choosing a wider shape with a 4:3 ratio, which may be similar to the dimensions of the Google Pixel Fold. It might feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen. For context, the rumored Samsung Wide Fold is anticipated to have a 5.35-inch inner display and a 7.58-inch outer screen, which is very close to what the Apple device could offer.
In terms of features, the iPhone Fold is likely to have two rear-facing cameras and also two front cameras. It is expected to run on the A20 Pro chipset, made with 2nm technology. The connectivity options are rumored to be powered by a C2 modem from Apple. Additionally, the iPhone Fold could come with a power button that has Touch ID capabilities.
