$1.17 Million US Medicare Fraud: Indian National Jailed December 03, 2025 11:33
An individual from India who confessed to running a Medicare scam worth millions through a diagnostic lab in Washington was given a two-year prison sentence by US Attorney Charles Neil Floyd. Mohammed Asif, 35, was arrested on April 10, 2025, at Chicago O'Hare International Airport while trying to catch an international flight and has been mandated to pay back $1,174,813. After serving his time, he is likely to be deported. Asif admitted guilt on September 4 to plotting health care fraud linked to the activities of American Labworks LLC, a diagnostic testing lab in Everett, Washington that is no longer in business. US District Judge James L. Robart, who handed down the sentence, remarked that the fraud loss of $1,174,813 is “a considerable sum. It was money taken from the Medicare system, which is meant to assist the elderly and those in need… (The defendant) lacks moral integrity as a willing participant in the scam… He is someone the society needs protection from.” Prosecutors stated that Asif and his accomplices charged Medicare for COVID-19 and other respiratory tests that were never ordered or conducted. US Attorney Floyd remarked, “Mr Asif was part of a plan to illegally obtain over a million dollars from Medicare — funds intended for essential medical services.” He continued, “Unfortunately, schemes like this are not uncommon. Medicare is frequently targeted by fraud, resulting in significant damage to the United States and taxpayers. We will keep investigating and prosecuting such fraudulent activities.” Court documents reveal that records from Washington state indicate American Labworks was created in October 2021 and shut down in March 2025. Its license as a Medical Test Site expired in December 2023. During this time, Asif was recognized as the owner and director by the state and Medicare. Claims data from April to December 2024 shows that the lab charged Medicare over $8.7 million for diagnostic services and obtained more than $1.1 million in reimbursements. Complaints began to emerge. Between June 2024 and March 2025, Medicare received over 200 complaints from beneficiaries and others regarding the lab. Some beneficiaries reported being billed for tests they never had. One enrollee stated that Medicare paid American Labworks $545 for COVID-19 tests in August 2023 and March 2024, even though they were not tested then. Others mentioned not even recognizing the doctors listed as referring providers. Several physicians, whose names appeared in the lab's billing documentation, informed investigators that they had not sent any patients to that facility. In certain situations, records indicated testing dates after a beneficiary had passed away. Other claims showed referrals from doctors who had died before the tests were supposedly ordered. Financial documents showed that Asif was the key person in the scheme. Prosecutors mentioned he had control over the company’s bank account, accepted numerous checks, and took out significant amounts of money. In May 2024 alone, he took out $260,000. Shortly after that, Asif, who was living in the US on a student visa, traveled to India. He came back in March 2025 just as investigators were getting closer to him. “Charging Medicare for millions of dollars' worth of lab tests that were never provided is a grave crime that damages the trust in our healthcare system and takes away essential resources from those who genuinely need them,” remarked Robb R. Breeden, the Acting Special Agent in Charge of HHS-OIG. FBI Seattle Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington stated, “Like many other cheats who exploit such circumstances, Mr. Asif took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to rob taxpayers for his own benefit…”

The lawyer from Gurugram, who was taken into custody for supposedly spying and sharing information with Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI, had two bank accounts and made seven trips to Amritsar to receive money, as reported by his lawyer companion, Musharraf, also known as Parvez, who had previously been held by the police. Musharraf mentioned that he befriended the detained lawyer, Rizwan, while interning at the Sohna court in 2022. Afterwards, Musharraf started working in the Nuh court, while Rizwan continued his practice in the Gurugram court. However, both were involved in many legal matters together and also socialized multiple times. Musharraf informed the police that in July, he and Rizwan drove to the Amritsar Wagah border in his vehicle. They visited the Golden Temple, where Rizwan received a bag of cash from a couple of individuals on a two-wheeler, though he couldn’t recognize them. On their way back, they had a car accident in Amritsar, which made them abandon the car and continue their journey by train. Musharraf stated that they returned to Amritsar on August 1 to retrieve the damaged car. He mentioned they spent the night at a hotel in Amritsar, but Rizwan left during the night, saying he would go to get money. During questioning, it was disclosed that Rizwan went to Amritsar seven times to pick up cash from individuals driving a Scorpio and a Skoda vehicle. Rizwan confessed to gathering Rs 41 lakh in cash, which he passed on to a person named Ajay Arora. It was also uncovered that Rizwan had two bank accounts: one with Punjab National Bank in Tauru and another with IndusInd Bank in Sohna. Officials reported that the Punjab National Bank account had been shut down a few months prior due to surpassing the limit. This indicates that large sums of hawala money were transferred into his account from Pakistani handlers, much of which was allegedly utilized to bolster the terrorist network in Punjab, they added. Musharraf stated he did not know the specific amount of money deposited in Rizwan's accounts. Investigating authorities discovered questionable transactions on Rizwan's laptop and phone, according to officials. They also mentioned that Musharraf and Rizwan had communicated over the phone shortly before Rizwan's arrest. Musharraf was detained by the Nuh police on the same day but was released four days later when investigators found no evidence linking him to the case. The Nuh Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is looking into the Pakistani spying case, has apprehended three additional individuals from Amritsar—Sandeep Singh alias Gagan, Amandeep Singh, and Jaskaran Singh—who are accused of transferring large sums of money from Pakistani handlers to Rizwan through hawala routes and financing anti-national activities in Punjab. Multiple police teams from Nuh are conducting searches across Punjab related to this case.

Read MoreWhat Happens when you drink Saunf Water Every Night? December 02, 2025 15:13
In numerous Indian households, saunf is seen as more than just something to freshen your breath after eating. This spice boasts various health benefits, and one easy way to enjoy them is by drinking saunf water. This gentle, calming drink has been used traditionally for healing, and recently, it has become popular in health routines, late-night detox practices, and even conversations on social media about better sleep and digestive comfort. However, its benefits extend beyond simply relieving bloating or helping you relax after a heavy meal. If you make it a part of your daily habits for a month, saunf water could positively affect many areas of your health. Here’s what making it a nightly practice could do. Soaking fennel seeds and sipping the infused water is very helpful, as highlighted in a 2015 article from the Journal of the Saudi Society of Agricultural Sciences, showing that it draws out water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin C and flavonoids. This technique is hydrating and easily absorbed by the body, making it effective for alleviating bloating and acidity. Here are five benefits you may experience from drinking saunf water every night: Your Digestion Becomes Easier: Saunf is rich in essential oils that can help relax your stomach muscles, according to a 2022 study. With regular consumption, this can lessen bloating, mitigate gas, and promote smoother bowel movements. If you often wake up feeling weighed down or tired, this nighttime habit may provide gentle relief. You can think of it as a little spa treatment for your stomach, as it calms and helps restore balance. Just a simple glass before bed can lead to more comfortable mornings. You Might Sleep More Soundly Because of Its Relaxing Properties: Warm saunf water is naturally soothing for the body. Its ingredients may help reduce muscle tension and encourage relaxation at night, according to a 2020 study. Drinking it before bed can improve your bedtime routine and lead to deeper sleep. It’s like a cozy embrace for your nervous system, helping you fall asleep peacefully. Add a moment of quiet, and you have a wonderful nightly routine. Your Body May Retain Less Water: Due to its mild diuretic qualities, saunf water can help minimize excess water retention, according to the same study. Over the course of a month, this can help you feel lighter, especially if you are often puffy or swollen from consuming salty foods. You will notice that the slight feeling of bloating has greatly decreased. It gently encourages your body to release what it doesn’t need. It May Help Balance Hormones: Saunf has phytonutrients that may aid in maintaining hormonal health. While it isn’t a fix for hormonal imbalances, regular consumption may help relieve symptoms like mood swings or mild discomfort related to your cycle for many individuals. With time, you may notice that your hormonal health stabilizes and your mood improves overall. Your Body's Natural Detox Process Gets A Boost: Fennel seeds have antioxidants that assist the body in battling oxidative stress. As per Macrobiotic Coach and Nutritionist Shilpa Arora, water with fennel added is a treatment to clean the digestive system and works well for those who have long-term constipation. Drinking fennel water often can aid in natural detox by improving how the kidneys operate and helping remove waste more effectively. It’s a simple way to refresh your body without the complications of strict diets.
Read MoreCoffee Consumption could Slow Cellular Ageing December 02, 2025 13:05
There are various opinions about coffee. Some emphasize the positive aspects of the drink, while others bring up its negative effects. A new research report revealed that drinking coffee helps slow down cell aging in adults with serious mental health issues. The findings were published in the journal BMJ Mental Health. The researchers looked at telomere length, which indicates biological aging, to investigate this relationship. The results showed that individuals who drank a moderate amount of coffee each day had longer telomeres. The largest gap was found between those who do not drink coffee and those who have three to four cups daily. Some coffee drinkers even had telomeres that indicated they were biologically about five years younger than those who do not drink coffee. People with serious mental disorders often have a shorter expected lifespan due to a higher likelihood of age-related diseases such as heart disease and cancer. This has led researchers to speculate that biological aging happens faster in this group, commonly assessed by telomere length, which naturally decreases with age. Multiple studies indicate that individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder generally have shorter telomeres compared to healthy people, though the precise reason for this is unknown. Since telomeres are influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors, scientists are interested in how diet affects them, including the intake of coffee. Although those with serious mental conditions often intake more caffeine than the general population, this is the first research to directly examine the relationship between coffee consumption and telomere length in schizophrenia and mood disorders. The research involved 436 adults diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum or mood disorders from four psychiatric facilities in Norway. Those with neurological conditions, severe brain injuries, or illnesses affecting brain function were left out. Qualified clinicians carried out diagnostic interviews, while medication use was monitored through health records. Participants reported their coffee intake in four categories: none, one to two cups, three to four cups, and five or more cups each day. Their smoking history and status were also documented. Researchers measured telomere length from blood samples, presenting it as a ratio of telomere to single-copy genes, which they converted into estimated biological aging years. Participants mainly varied by age and their history of smoking within different coffee drinking categories. Individuals who drank five or more cups each day were typically older and had smoked for longer durations compared to the other groups. Coffee consumption did not change based on gender or the use of medications, however, those diagnosed with schizophrenia generally consumed more coffee than those with mood disorders. Most of the participants were smokers, with an average tobacco use of nine years. The analysis showed a unique pattern: telomere length increased with coffee consumption up to three to four cups per day, but did not increase further. The most significant difference was seen between those who did not drink coffee and the group consuming three to four cups. Those with moderate coffee intake had longer telomeres, while those who consumed five or more cups did not benefit as much. In general, individuals drinking between one and four cups daily appeared to be biologically about five years younger than those who did not consume coffee. These results were consistent regardless of their diagnosis or gender, showing similar effects across both men and women, and within both schizophrenia and mood disorder categories. The study indicates that moderate coffee drinking might be associated with a reduction in cellular aging for people dealing with serious mental health issues, following an inverted J-shape trend. This suggests that the positive effects are highest with moderate intake but may lessen or vanish with very high amounts. Possible reasons for these effects could include the antioxidants in coffee that help lower inflammation and oxidative stress, as well as caffeine's role in influencing telomerase, the enzyme that protects telomeres. These findings are especially significant for individuals with schizophrenia and mood disorders, where faster aging is often seen. The study has some limitations, such as depending on individuals to report their coffee intake, not having details on where caffeine comes from or what type of coffee was consumed, and lacking information on markers of inflammation or oxidative stress. In conclusion, the research points out the potential advantages of moderate coffee consumption but also cautions against potential risks tied to very high intake, emphasizing the need to keep track of caffeine consumption among those with serious mental health disorders.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is said to have arranged a meeting with India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, the chief of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar, and several other high-ranking officials before the second ODI against South Africa on Wednesday to discuss some urgent topics. This comes at a time when there is speculation about the future of key players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have recently performed exceptionally well in their last matches. As reported by Sportstar, the talks are expected to involve BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, joint secretary Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and national selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar. The report did not confirm whether the new BCCI president, Mithun Manhas, would be present. Since the meeting is scheduled on the day of the match, it seems unlikely that veteran players like Kohli and Rohit will be called in. A senior BCCI representative was quoted saying that this meeting is organized to maintain 'selection consistency' within the team, focusing on long-term development and overall team performance. The discussion will aim to tackle the weaknesses that were evident in the Indian team's recent defeat against South Africa in the home Test series. With both Gambhir and Agarkar attending, the board seeks to clarify specific management issues and plan future actions accordingly. "During the home Test season, there were moments of unclear strategies both on and off the field. We desire clarity and a forward-looking approach, especially since the next Test series is eight months away," the representative mentioned. "India is expected to be a strong contender for the T20 World Cup next year and a serious competitor for the ODI World Cup afterward, so we want to resolve these matters promptly," the representative added. This scenario suggests there might be communication issues between the management and senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. There were speculations about the BCCI wanting Kohli to come back from his Test retirement, but Kohli dismissed any thought of such a decision after the Ranchi ODI on Sunday concluded.

The Union government has announced that 15 people, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, are now classified as Fugitive Economic Offenders (FEOs) as of October 31, 2025. This information was shared by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament on Monday. This announcement came in answer to a question posed by Congress Member of Parliament Murari Lal Meena from Dausa, during the Winter Session. According to the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act of 2018 (FEOA), these offenders together owe ₹58,082 crore to around twelve public banks. This total includes ₹26,645 crore as the main amount noted at the time of NPA and ₹31,437 crore as interest that has built up from that point until October 31, 2025. The government stated that ₹19,187 crore has been recovered from these offenders as of October 31, 2025. Meena had asked the Finance Minister in Lok Sabha for the number of people labeled as fugitive economic offenders up to now under the FEOA, particularly concerning significant financial frauds against public sector banks. "Out of the 15 offenders, nine are part of major fraud cases against public sector banks. The group includes well-known figures like Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi," Chaudhary mentioned in response accessible on the Lok Sabha website. Mallya is charged with a fraud exceeding ₹9,000 crore taken from a group of Indian public banks for Kingfisher Airlines, which is no longer operating. On the other hand, Nirav and his uncle Mehul Choksi are linked to a ₹13,000 crore scam affecting Punjab National Bank (PNB), one of the largest banking frauds in India's history. The government introduced the FEO Act in 2018 to prevent economic offenders from escaping Indian law by staying outside the reach of Indian courts. This law allows authorities to seize and attach the earnings from crimes and assets when the involved money surpasses ₹100 crore. The individuals listed as Fugitive Economic Offenders include: Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Nitin J Sandesara, Chetan J Sandesara, Dipti C Sandesara from the Sterling Biotech fraud case, Sudharshan Venkatraman, Ramanujam Sesharathnam, former promoters of Zylog Systems Ltd, Pushpesh Kumar Baid, and Hitesh Kumar Narendrabhai Patel. Last week, the Supreme Court ordered that all legal actions against the Sandesara brothers regarding the Sterling Biotech bank fraud be canceled, on the condition that they pay ₹5,100 crore as a “final and complete payment” to the banks they owe. “If the Sandesara brothers agree to pay the amount as arranged in the one-time settlement, and public funds are returned to the banks, then continuing with the criminal cases would not be beneficial,” stated the Court. When questioned if the government was creating a plan to stop such wrongdoers from fleeing the country in the future, either by using legal restrictions or watchlists, Pankaj Chaudhary mentioned that there is no such plan being worked on at this time.
