A teenager in North Carolina is being called a hero by firefighters after he saved his 7-month-old cousin from a blazing house.
Kinston Fire Rescue said that the house located in the South Adkin Street was a total loss after the fire started from over-cooked food on the stove.
The infant was inside the house sleeping, while the family was in the backyard when the fire broke out, according to Captain Willian Barss.
The grandmother first noticed the smoke and cautioned all the family members. LJ Gary, who is a junior at Kingston High School, ran in through the back door and into the kitchen to get his cousin, Michari Strayhorn.
Gary then tried to leave the house the same way he entered, but by that time the blazes and smoke were intense, according to Barss. Gray quickly reacted to the situation; he turned around and ran out the front door.
"My daddy called the fire department, and I got the baby, ran in front got the baby, and by the time I got the baby the back, it was like fire, so I just ran through the front," said Gray.
The captain said that all this happened before the first fire truck arrived at the incident.
Captain Brass said “as a firefighter were trained with all of the protective equipment that we have, the bunker pants, the coats the hoods, gloves, to go into these fires and were trained to know our limits." He added that this “young man did it with even less than what an average person would be wearing on the street."
The teenager was wearing only basketball shorts and sneakers at the time.
Gray and his cousin did not sustain any injuries from the smoke or fire.
Gary with his family lived in the home, and they lost everything in the fire. The grandmother said they will rebuild the house.
