Rich in Vitamin C, dietary fiber, potassium, and important antioxidants, guava is a popular fruit among many because of its nutritional benefits and sweet-tart flavor. Eating guava during the hot Indian summer helps boost the immune system, aids digestion, improves skin health, and promotes overall wellness. Due to its several health benefits, guava is commonly enjoyed as a nutritious salad or snack sprinkled with chaat masala in Indian homes. It is also blended into smoothies, mixed juices, and jams that children find delightful. However, guava may not be suitable for everyone. Although it is filled with nutrients, eating too much of this fruit can cause digestive issues, increase blood sugar levels, trigger allergic reactions, or lead to skin irritation for some people. If you often experience bloating or are at risk for diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or eczema, be careful with the amount of guava you include in your diet.

Here are four groups of individuals who should either steer clear of guavas or consume them in limited amounts:

Those Experiencing Regular Bloating: For people who often feel bloated, the high fructose and Vitamin C found in guava might worsen the situation. When someone takes in more Vitamin C than their body can handle, the excess ferments in the intestines, causing gas and stomach pain. For those with fructose malabsorption, guava can lead to stomach swelling and gas, as their intestines have trouble absorbing fructose.

Individuals with Diabetes: Thanks to its low glycemic index, health professionals recommend guava for diabetic patients since it slowly releases sugar into the bloodstream. However, eating too many guavas in one sitting can increase blood sugar levels and complicate diabetes management. Those with any form of diabetes should restrict their intake to a maximum of two small guavas each day.

Patients with IBS: Individuals dealing with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are also at risk from guava’s potential side effects. While guava's soluble and insoluble fibers generally promote digestion and relieve constipation in healthy individuals, consuming it in excess can be problematic for those with IBS or other delicate digestive disorders.

If You Have Eczema or Sensitive Skin: The natural compounds found in both guava fruit and its leaves can be irritating to certain skin types. Consuming too much of this popular fruit may worsen eczema or other chronic skin issues, leading to redness, itching, or inflammation. People with such skin conditions should consider avoiding guavas altogether or speaking to a dermatologist before adding them to their diet.
