Greece has become the leading choice for retirees worldwide, as stated in the 2026 Global Retirement Index from International Living. This yearly report assesses the top locations for retirement by looking at living costs, healthcare availability, climate, and visa choices. This year, Greece surpassed popular options like Panama and Portugal. The Mediterranean country received high marks for its reasonable cost of living, dependable healthcare, welcoming visa policies, and enjoyable coastal weather, according to the findings. Experts indicate that recent changes to visa rules in other European nations have made Greece even more appealing. The country provides various paths to residency, such as the Golden Visa, the Financially Independent Person permit for retirees, and a Digital Nomad Visa for those wanting to continue working remotely. Quality healthcare is crucial for older individuals, and Greece achieved a score of 89 out of 100 for its medical services. International Living pointed out that the nation has well-qualified doctors and strong private healthcare options. One reporter mentioned that private insurance for two adults averages about $288 per month.
The cost of living in Greece is relatively low. You can find seaside rental properties ranging from $691 to $1,151 each month, and a couple can live comfortably on under $2,000 each month. This allows enough funds to enjoy the local food, culture, and laid-back beach lifestyle. Retirees hoping to escape the cold winters of the north enjoy Greece's warm summers and mild winters. While Athens can be very hot during summer, many islands in Greece provide cooler alternatives. Panama and Costa Rica ranked second and third in the 2026 list, while Portugal dropped from second to fourth place. Other nations in the Top 10 include Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Thailand, and Malaysia.
