Planning a trip to Thailand soon? It's good for visitors to know that the country's strict afternoon drinking laws are being looked at again, which is great news for people who like to have a drink while exploring. Recently updated rules say that anyone found drinking alcohol between 2 PM and 5 PM may have to pay fines of up to 10,000 baht (over Rs 27,000). This law also focused on the advertising of alcoholic beverages, especially using famous people or other marketing methods, and put the responsibility on consumers instead of just businesses. Soon after, there was a strong reaction from the tourism and hospitality industries. Reports indicate that operators said this rule was affecting regular service at restaurants and bars and was causing confusion for tourists in Thailand who were used to being able to enjoy a drink in the afternoon. In reply, the government has decided to lift the restriction for the time being. Thai officials have announced that starting in early December, selling alcohol will be allowed again from 2 PM to 5 PM as part of a six-month trial. Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat mentioned on November 13 that if the trial goes well, it may be extended beyond mid-2026, according to Bloomberg.
For tourists, this adjustment means they can enjoy their afternoon drinks without any concerns. It's also key to remember that licensed entertainment venues, specific hotels, certified places in tourist areas, and international airports were always allowed to serve alcohol all day, and that continues to be the case.
