North Carolina legislator compares Lincoln to Hitler

A legislator in North Carolina used his social media campaign page on Wednesday (April 12) to compare 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler.

Republican Representative of Cabarrus County, Larry Pittman posted the comment after he was criticized over the legislation he and two others sponsored in the General Assembly to restore a state ban on same sex marriage.

In the long thread of comments a user posed that the “Civil War is over. The Fed won. Get over it.”

In a response to that Pittman said, “And if Hitler had own, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort of tyrant”.

He wrote that Lincoln was “personally responsible for the deaths of 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”

According to www.civilwar.org an estimated 620,000 men died in the line of duty during the Civil War. But in 2012 The New York Times said that a historian from Binghamton University in New York recalculated the death toll and raised it to 750,000.

Pittman did not return a single phone call to his legislative office seeking comment.

Wayne Goodwin, North Carolina’s Democratic Party chairman called on the leaders of Republican to condemn Pittman’s comments.

"Representative Pittman and his ultra-conservative allies in the General Assembly have no sense of decency, no sense of shame and no sense of historical fact," Goodwin said in a statement.

The bill, which is being co-sponsored by Pittman claims that the United States Supreme Court overstepped with its 2015 ruling that effectively voided an amendment to North Carolina’s constitution forbidding same sex marriage. North Carolina voters approved the amendment in 2012.

House Speaker Time Moore of Kings Mountain said that the bill introduced will not be considered because the country’s highest court has firmly ruled on the issue.
