The latest student assignment plan has been approved by the Wake County School Board for the next academic year. Board members estimate over 2,300 students will be reassigned because of overcrowding.
According to the school, over 2,100 students are being assigned to one of three new schools opening next fall, Rogers Lane Elementary School, Hortons Creek Elementary School, and River Bend Middle School.
Around 1,100 students will be eligible to seek a grandfathering exemption.
The school system said the plan was necessary because "We are the largest school district in the state and continuing to grow. High growth creates overcrowded schools, which is detrimental to students' ability to learn and the overall function of the school."
