Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to have talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, known as BCCI, regarding their future in international cricket. After retiring from both Test and T20I formats, it remains unclear if they will continue to play One Day Internationals, or ODIs, after their upcoming white-ball series in Australia. Sources indicate that Kohli and Rohit will meet with a BCCI official to talk about their future plans, with the board expected to leave the ultimate choice to these two legendary batsmen. This meeting is likely to happen after the Asia Cup concludes. Reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer might be named as the ODI captain in that same discussion, as BCCI aims to reduce Rohit's burden of captaincy. This news follows Iyer being overlooked by selectors for the forthcoming Asia Cup, while Shubman Gill is anticipated to return as the vice-captain for the T20I side.
If Kohli can manage to continue his playing career a bit longer, he still has a slight chance to match Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the highest runs scored in ODI cricket. Kohli has recently surpassed 14,000 runs but is still over 4,000 runs behind Tendulkar’s famed record. Yet, Kohli has a significantly better batting average compared to Tendulkar.
Kohli’s most recent achievement took place during the 2025 Indian Premier League, where he finally secured a title after 18 years, leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to victory. Rohit was seen at The Oval for the fifth and final Test against England, a match won by India by six runs, allowing them to tie the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at 2-2. Throughout 273 ODIs, Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs with an average of 48.76, featuring 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries. He also uniquely holds the record for scoring three double hundreds in ODIs.
