People have different ideas about the best thing to do when you first wake up, like having tea, going for a walk, eating fruit, or having breakfast. But the easiest and most “useful” thing is to drink water, even before brushing your teeth. Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, a senior internal medicine consultant at Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai, said, “Drinking 1 liter of water right after waking up can be very beneficial, and it can greatly improve your health.” After sleeping for 6 to 8 hours, your body might not have enough water. Dr. Agarwal said that “drinking water first thing in the morning helps to ‘wake up’ your body parts, get rid of bad stuff, and get your body ready to work better every day,” also noting that better digestion is one of the main benefits.

The expert said that water helps your stomach and gut work the way they should. “It also prevents constipation and feeling bloated. Many people who start their day with water see better digestion, feel less heavy all day, and also see improvements in their skin. Your skin will feel new, soft, and hydrated. It also helps make your skin clearer. Water gets rid of toxins in your body, which can help reduce acne and dryness, making your skin look healthy and glowy,” Dr. Agarwal explained.

Drinking water in the morning can also make you feel more energetic. “When your body has the right amount of water, your brain works better, you feel more awake, and you feel happier. Drinking water early in the day can help you burn calories and help you manage your weight, along with eating healthy and exercising regularly,” Dr. Agarwal suggested. So, if you want a simple, natural way to feel more awake, active, and healthy, try drinking 1 liter of water every morning to feel new and healthy. “People with heart, liver, and kidney problems should be careful about drinking this much water and should listen to their doctor’s advice on how much to drink,” Dr. Agarwal cautioned.
