No other country is as crucial to the United States as India, remarked US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, as he mentioned that Washington and New Delhi are preparing to restart discussions for their next trade agreement starting Tuesday, January 12. Gor, who also serves as Special Envoy to South and Central Asia at the US Embassy, mentioned that US President Donald Trump might go to India next year. Speaking at the US Embassy in Delhi, Gor pointed out that Trump's bond with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is genuine and emphasized that true friends can work out their disagreements. "The connection between the United States and India is not only based on common interests but is also a strong relationship at the highest levels. Friends may have different opinions, but they always find a way to solve their issues," he stated in his introductory speech. "India is the biggest country in the world. Thus, achieving this mission is challenging, but we are focused on succeeding," Gor added.
He highlighted that trade plays a significant role in the relationship between New Delhi and Washington, but both countries also collaborate in many vital sectors like security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health. "I have traveled the globe with President Trump, and I can confirm that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is authentic," Gor affirmed. The US ambassador-designate expressed that his goal is to elevate the partnership between the two nations. He also mentioned that Trump could visit India next year. "This represents the meeting point of the oldest democracy and the largest democracy. During my last dinner with him, President Trump shared stories from his previous trip to India and spoke highly of his friendship with India's great Prime Minister. I hope the President will come to visit us soon, likely within the next year or two. President Trump often calls at 2 in the morning, and considering the time difference in New Delhi, that might actually work out nicely," he added. Gor underlined the significance of the strategic partnership with India and stated his intention to pursue an ambitious plan.
No partner is as important as India. In the upcoming months and years, my aim as the ambassador is to follow a very ambitious plan. We will work together as true strategic allies, each contributing our strengths, respect, and leadership," he stated. Regarding the ongoing discussions about the India-US trade agreement, Gor recognized that this is a tough job and mentioned that he was committed to successfully completing it. "Many of you have asked me for news on the trade deal talks. Both parties are still actively involved. In fact, the next discussion about trade will take place tomorrow. India is the largest country in the world. So, reaching an agreement is not easy," he expressed. Gor also shared that India will join the Pax Silica alliance.
"I am happy to share that India will receive an invitation to become a full member of this group of countries next month," he mentioned. The Pax Silica alliance is a strategic project led by the US aimed at creating a reliable, strong, and innovative silicon supply chain.
