UNC students and professors rally for 'sanctuary school'

To protect undocumented students, following the president-elect Donald Trump's strong stance against undocumented immigrants, who are not legally in the nation, dozens of students of the UNC Chapel Hill are urging schools leaders to take the necessary step.

A number of students and several professors took to the mic in a town hall in front of the administrative building on campus asking the university to not share information or comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They also delivered a letter signed by more than 3,700 people to the University authorities and urge to declare the campus a sanctuary school.

Last month, the university has replied by pointing to a message sent out to everyone in the campus community, which they said "reaffirms" their "commitment to diversity, including differing beliefs and opinions."

Barbara Sostaita, a UNC Ph.D student and formerly undocumented Argentinian immigrant, said that, "For me this is very personal. It is tied to those people that I love and call my chosen family. I have a lot of friends with DACA who are scared that they'll lose their jobs or their scholarships come January."
