There are strong indications that Apple is poised to unveil its inaugural foldable iPhone in 2026, and recent reports suggest a significant update may accompany this device. Since the launch of the iPhone X series, Face ID has been a cornerstone of Apple’s security features, but the reports imply a shift could happen with the foldable variant. After years of dependence on the 3D sensor-based Face ID, the company appears ready to reintroduce Touch ID, particularly for its foldable model.

This information stems from a source who obtained insights from the Chinese social media site Weibo. The insider alleges that the foldable iPhone will incorporate a punch-hole camera design, resembling the setup used by many Android devices, which would eliminate space for the typical Face ID notch. Consequently, Touch ID may be reinstated in iPhones following the 2022 iPhone SE.

While Apple has maintained the use of Touch ID on its iPads, it has opted for Face ID on its iPad Pro models for several years. The adoption of new display technology from Samsung is anticipated to improve the visibility of creases on the screen, and Apple could implement Touch ID on the power button, similar to its current offerings. Speculations about Apple venturing into the foldable phone sector have been prevalent for some time. A recent report hinted that the tech company from Cupertino is expected to initiate mass production of its first two foldable devices in the latter half of 2026. According to a research note communicated to GF Securities, Jeff Pu indicated that both devices have passed into the New Product Introduction (NPI) stage at Foxconn.

The foldable devices are anticipated to feature a 5,000mAh battery, which may not compete with the capacities of competing brands. It is expected that both models will make their global debut by 2027, with more details likely emerging as the launch date approaches.
