In a major development, the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of the Right to Education Act. This has paved way for a better future of the country. The Supreme Court has directed all private schools across the country--irrespective of the board –to admit at least 25 % economically backward students and provide free education to them from standard 1 to till they reach 14 years. It is known that Right to Education Act provides for free and compulsory education for all.
When the Bill came into effect, several private schools took classes to the poor students separately after the school timings and now that the court verdict has come, the schools have no other option other than inducting them into the regular classes. In other words, every school (how rich or posh it may be) will contain 25 per cent of students hailing from economically backward students. The private schools would be getting subsidies from the governments—both centre and the state.
This is one of the best steps to see a brighter and a better India in near future. Also, it’s a good lesson to some parents who feel that their wards should not sit among poor and socially backward children. But there are still so many doubts in the air regarding correct implementation. Can the government guarantee that these children would not be subjected to discrimination at some rich schools because they come from backward sections is one of the apprehensions. (Phani)
