A 16-year-old teen has been detained for allegedly killing and burying the body of her newborn in her backyard in North Carolina.

Ashley Marie Reed, the girl who kept her pregnancy hush-hushed, surrendered to authorities on Tuesday after they found the 8.5-pound dead baby girl buried in a grocery bag outside her Franklin County home.

She has been charged with conceal/failure to report death, a felony. Right now, she is out on a bail of $50,000 bond.

Deputies say Reed successfully hid her pregnancy between herself and her boyfriend, 18-year-old Aaron Davis, before delivering late last month. Davis wasn't there when she delivered but was informed about the birth through a text.

After the officials recovered the infant's body on June 29, it was sent for a preliminary autopsy. The revealed that the newborn, named Emma Marie, bled to death after its umbilical cord was snapped too close.

Davis was informed when her water broke and the two had agreed to meet in the church. However, she later informed that the baby didn’t make it.

Davis, seen sitting beside his mother, said that he encouraged Reed to tell someone about her pregnancy but she refused. The first and last time he saw his daughter was at a funeral home.

Reed is scheduled to make her first court appearance on July 29.
